Located near Oneroa Beach, Waiheke Island, this home is positioned on a very steep site, facing north with views towards Hekerua Bay and beyond, with access from the southern located driveway. This new build was designed to fulfill the clients’specific requirements and to maximise the coastal views using a limited budget. The brief was to create a stylish contemporary home incorporating the living areas and master bedroom on one level with two other separate bedrooms and bathroom on the lower level that could be used as guest accommodation or family rooms.Multiple flexible outdoor spaces were required. The clients expressly desired a view from the front entry through the house down to Hekerua Bay.
The materials selected for the design were aluminium joinery, vertical dark stained cedar, contrasting horizontal natural stained cedar, dark timber battening at the entry and as handrails/screens. Internally, a white palette was used to enhance the light filled interior and set off the glowing natural timber floor.
Our approach was to design a house with an emphasis on use of sustainable natural materials, and textures that blend and shift with the light and surrounding vegetation. We worked to ensure that outdoor living could be maximised, without undue exposure to the elements. Two sheltered decks were designed, one between the dining and the master bedroom on the main level and a second one directly below, forming an essential element in this couple’s lifestyle.
Due to the steep gradient of the site, our approach was to design a simple cedar clad box running across the site parallel with the site contours. The lower level was retained to the southern side to sink the house lower on the site keeping the house within planning restraints and to reduce the dominance of the building on the ridge.Creating this long form is cost-effective and enables sea views from all the bedrooms, living areas and outdoor decks.
The cedar box has recessed sections for covered and sheltered deck areas on both levels, and the living room is set back from the northern face to provide visual privacy to the neighbour on the western side of the site. Extensive northern glazing maximises views and affords sea views through the house from the southern courtyard area.
The roof form is designed to mimic the slope of the ground contours and was extended up over the front entry area which is elevated above the main floor level. The entry and stairway is centrally located dividing the master bedroom area from the living with the height and orientation precisely designed, ensured a view of the bay below greets the owners and visitors when entering the house.
The house fits snugly into the terrain on the southern elevation allowing for a retained outdoor courtyard area, screened from the driveway and sheltered from the sea breeze, flooded with afternoon sun. This is accessed from the living area with servery access from the kitchen
